About Us

What is the Hungarian Bible Society? The Hungarian Bible Society in its current form has existed since 1992. Our "spiritual heritage" can be traced back to 1832 when the British and Foreign Bible Society took over the work related to the Hungarian Bible, its text, its publishing and distribution. The revised Károli Bible in 1908 was also their achievement. After more than a hundred years of faithful service, in the post World War II era this very first and good standing Bible Society could no longer continue its work in a Hungary that was starting to embrace communism, and was forced to leave. The work was handed down to the Protestant churches of Hungary. They formed The Bible Council to perform the work of the former Society. The Bible Council soon became an associate member of the United Bible Societies whose world assembly took place in Budapest in 1988.
After freedom came in, a new situation a different form of operation became necessary. In December 1991 the Hungarian Bible Society Foundation was formed. It is not an independent organisation. In today's Hungary, where we live in freedom, we see all the blessings of it as well as the difficulties it presents. The Hungarian Bible Society serves the mission of the member churches according to its best ability with particularly close connection that ties it to the Reformed Church of Hungary.
