Károli Bible

The Book of Books is our holy reading, therefore the distribution of it among those who are interested takes a prominent part in the distribution of books in the Church. The Holy Scripture was first translated into Hungarian by Gáspár Károli, Dean of the Reformed Church at Gönc, and was published at Vizsoly in 1590. Besides its incomparable historic-cultural values, the Bible is the bearer of God's revelation, the pillar of our spiritual lives, which had for centuries been the preserver of Hungarian language as well as the most widely read book. Due to linguistic changes, the text of the Bible had to be revised. The text of the Károli Bible currently in use was last officially revised in 1908. In compliance with requests, the Károli Bible is available in four different sizes, all leatherette-bound:
Large Family Bible, 250 x 170 mm
Small Family Bible, 200 x 140 mm
Standard Bible, 170 x 110 mm
Pocket Bible, 140 x 100 mm

New Translation Bible (revised, 1990)

The New Translation Bible appeared in print in 1975. The revision of the entire Holy Scripture translated from the original Hebrew and Greek was completed by a Committee for Revision considering contributing readers' remarks and comments. Besides remaining faithful to the original text, the Bible's language reflects today's spoken Hungarian language. It was published in 1990 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Károli Bible.

Study Bible (Selections)

This Study Bible was prepared as a selection for the 13-25 age group. The text of the Holy Scripture is in today's Hungarian (Revised New Protestant Translation, 1990), and the linguistic and cultural-historical explanations give insight on the background of the origins of biblical texts, thereby introducing the young reader to the perception of experiences and thoughts of societies of biblical periods, as well as their perceptions of God and humankind. This book was declared to be an educational textbook by the Department of Edication and Culture.

Deuterocanonical Books of the Bible

In Luther's original Bible translation and in the Károli Bible, one can still find the 'only second to canonical' books. The opinion of Protestant Bible readers is shared in this area. Turning to Luther, it can be stated that these books are not equivalent to the other books of the Holy Scripture but are useful for studying them. The translation of deuterocanonical books was based on the classical texts, bequeathed to us in the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament, 3-4. centuries B.C.).

Small Handbook on the Bible

Siegfried Herrmann: Introduction to the Old Testament
Original title: Einführung in das Alte Testament (Seine Entstehung und seine Schriften von Professor Siegfried Herrmann)
Walter Klaiber: Introduction to the New Testament
Original title: Einführung in das Neue Testament (Seine Entstehung und seine Schriften von Walter Klaiber)
Translated by Dezső Fükő
On behalf of the Hungarian Bible Society, the John Calvin Publishing House publishes these leaflets about the Bible, collected in a single volume. The leaflets written by two prominent theologians contain what everyone needs to know about the rise and fundamental teachings of biblical books. What Walter Klaiber writes in the Epilogue refers to both parts of this brief overview on the New testament books and their origins. Klaiber offers useful devices in the understanding of these writings: "The person, who knows under what circumstance a letter was written or to whom a gospel was addressed, can understand the books' statement more easily. In the explanations, one or two things might appear strange or provoking but criticism is not the ultimate aim that stands behind them. The observations referring to concrete biblical texts urge us to rethink the traditional conceptions. We cannot evade this challenge."

Zoltán Lőrincz: The Bible in Hungarian Painting

(With coloured illustrations to each of the 66 books of the Bible)
This beautiful and taxing piece of work is not an ecclesiastical-artistic compilation. It rather exhibits paintings for private use, from classic and contemporary works displaying the great schools of style of the history of art to the works so far kept hidden from the public eye. As the author could order only one piece of illustration to each biblical book, he chose works of art reflecting the mentality and message of the book to be illustrated.

The good shepherd and The good Samaritan Related to the well-known biblical text of both stories, one can read the thoughts and prayers of outstanding representatives of Hungarian Protestant churches. Such a flier can remain a kind reminder of a family visit or a church gathering - may they be given to either children or adults.

The synchronised film works up nine chapters from the Old and nine chapters from the New Testament as well as three stories from the rise of Christianity - at a length of approximately 20 minutes. The treatment is suitable for making the viewers think further. These films produced in the original settings, are authentic as regards their mood, show the biblical stories realistically, and can represent the message of biblical stories in religious education, youth groups as well as family devotions. These stories on video are topical and spectacular. They are about freedom and slavery, hope and despair, power and resistance, home and exile, life and death, and genuinely communicate the cardinal message of the Bible.
